Having made his Super 14 debut against the Crusaders as a 21-year-old in 2007, Dennis was struck down with back-to-back knee reconstructions which ruined his 2008 season. Dennis spent much of that year coaching the Sydney University Colts to the Sydney premiership, with those leadership qualities evident when he captained the club for much its their successful 2009 Tooheys New Shute Shield premiership campaign. Following Uni's Grand Final victory, Dennis was selected on the 2009 Wallabies Spring Tour where he featured in two midweek victories over Gloucester and Cardiff. After making his second appearance at Newlands in 2010, he made his starting debut the following week at Loftus Versfeld against the Bulls.
