Catchpole Medallist to be revealed at Gala Awards

The winner of the Ken Catchpole Medal for the most outstanding player in the Tooheys New Shute Shield will be revealed at the 2008 NSW Rugby Union Gala Awards on Sunday night.

The Ken Catchpole Medal The 'Black & White Ball' will be staged at Sydney's Sofitel Wentworth Hotel and will again double as a celebration of all levels of Rugby in NSW.

The final countdown of voting for the Ken Catchpole Medal - won in 2007 by Eastern Suburbs fullback Gavin Debartolo - will be the centrepiece of the evening. The top contenders for the 2008 Ken Catchpole Medal are:

 Nick Haydon (Sydney University)
 Dave Harvey (Gordon)

 Ratu Nasiganiyavi (Randwick)
 Luke Williams (Penrith)

Other Awards from the Tooheys New Shute Shield include the David Brockhoff Medal for Coach of the Year and the Dick Byres Medal for the Mazda Referee of the Year, with all three major awards to be presented by the gentlemen who have had the Medals struck in their names.

The Waratah Medal will be presented to the Super 14 player who made the most outstanding contribution to the HSBC Waratahs on and off the field during 2008, while the Chris Whitaker Aspiring Waratah Award will go to the HSBC Junior Waratah of the Year.

Awards will also be presented for Schools, Juniors, Women, Suburban and Country Rugby, as well as the Spirit of Rugby Award for Volunteer of the Year.

The black tie event will also be a night of celebration and entertainment, with performances by international dance sensation 'Burn the Floor' and famed party band 'The Shy Guys'.

The Awards Gala will be hosted by respected Channel 10 sports broadcaster Bill Woods, who fronted the network's coverage of last year's Rugby World Cup.
