NSWRU takes next step in self-governance

The NSW Rugby Union will take its next major step after regaining self-governance when it calls for applications for the role of executive director this weekend.

Current CEO, John McKay, an ARU employee, endorsed the move by the NSWRU board.

"I support this decision by the NSWRU board which now governs the game in its own right," said McKay today.

"I've been encouraged to apply but as yet I haven't made a decision.

NSWRU chairman Dilip Kumar said it was important for NSW to appoint its own executive director.

"John McKay has done an outstanding job over the last two years through the service agreement with the Australian Rugby Union but the time has come for a fully fledged NSW employee to run the union," said Kumar.

"We have repaid the $4.6million loan from the ARU and now sit in a strong financial position to move forward.

"The board has worked very hard to bring about constitutional reform to ensure a bright future for NSW but there is still much work to be done and that's why we need a NSW appointed manger in control," added Kumar.

The position will be advertised nationally in this weekend's press.
