HSBC Waratahs prop Paddy Ryan is one of only two uncapped players to be included in the Qantas Wallabies squad for the two-game tour of South Africa and Argentina in The Castrol EDGE Rugby Championship.
Having trained with the national squad throughout the Castrol EDGE Rugby Championship, the 23-year-old Tamworth-born tight-head prop last weekend helped his club, Sydney University, to a Shute Shield Grand Final victory over Southern Districts last Saturday.
He is among eight NSW players in the 28-man squad to travel to South Africa on Thursday morning, including Sitaleki Timani who recovers from the hamstring injury sustained earlier in the tournament, and Kane Douglas who made his debut in last weekend’s win over Argentina.
The Wallabies next face South Africa at Loftus Versfeld, Pretoria, on Saturday September 29 before travelling on to Argentina. Robbie Deans’ men will be bidding for back-to-back wins on the South African high veldt in that match, having clinched an epic 41-39 win at their last attempt at Bloemfontein in 2010, which represented Australia’s first win at altitude in the Republic for 47 years.
The Qantas Wallabies squad for the two-game tour of South Africa and Argentina in The Castrol EDGE Rugby Championship is:
Adam Ashley-Cooper (HSBC Waratahs), Kurtley Beale (Melbourne Rebels), Digby Ioane (Queensland Reds), Dominic Shipperley (Queensland Reds), Nick Cummins (Western Force), Ben Tapuai (Queensland Reds), Anthony Fainga’a (Queensland Reds), Pat McCabe (Brumbies), Berrick Barnes (HSBC Waratahs), Mike Harris (Queensland Reds), Nick Phipps (Melbourne Rebels), Brett Sheehan (Western Force), Scott Higginbotham (Queensland Reds), Radike Samo (Queensland Reds), Michael Hooper (Brumbies), Liam Gill (Queensland Reds), Dave Dennis (HSBC Waratahs), Rob Simmons (Queensland Reds), Nathan Sharpe (Western Force), Kane Douglas (HSBC Waratahs), Sitaleki Timani (HSBC Waratahs), Ben Alexander (Brumbies), Paddy Ryan (HSBC Waratahs), James Slipper (Queensland Reds), Benn Robinson (HSBC Waratahs), Saia Fainga’a (Queensland Reds), Stephen Moore (Brumbies), Tatafu Polota Nau (HSBC Waratahs).
