The HSBC Waratahs is the professional rugby union team for the Australian state of New South Wales. Also known as the NSW Waratahs and commonly referred to as the Tahs, the HSBC Waratahs compete in the Super Rugby tournament which is contested between February and August, by 15 teams, five from each of the three SANZAR countries (South Africa, New Zealand and Australia).
Historically the name for the New South Wales Rugby Union (NSWRU) representative team when it competed in the original Super Six competition, in 2011 responsibility for the HSBC Waratahs was taken over by Waratahs Rugby, a new organisation set up to administer the professional game in NSW, under license from the NSWRU.
The name and emblem comes from the Waratah, the state flower for New South Wales. The HSBC Waratahs play their home matches at Allianz Stadium, formerly the Sydney Football Stadium in Sydney’s Moore Park, and ANZ Stadium, the Western Sydney stadium originally built for the 2000 Olympics.
