With the retirement of Phil Waugh in 2011, Pat took over as the first choice openside flanker in the squad for the 2012 Super Rugby season. However, a horrific ankle injury against the Highlanders in round three of the competition saw him sidelined for the rest of the season.
Pat used his extended injury layoff to become one of the HSBC Waratahs’ most active ambassadors, visiting schools and rugby clubs across the state and helping to grow the NSW Country Rugby brand. His strong presence in the community saw him announced as the HSBC Waratahs Club Captain for the 2013 season.
A member of the Waratahs pathway since 2006, Pat McCutcheon was named captain of the Australian Sevens team in the 2009/10 IRB Series before being required for Super 14 duty. After making his Super Rugby debut in round 12 of the 2010 season, McCutcheon went on to represent Australian Barbarians against England and finished a stellar 2010 by captaining Australia at the Commonwealth Games and earning selection on the Wallabies Spring Tour of Hong Kong and Europe. He added nine more Super Rugby caps in 2011 and was one of the competition’s top pilferers at the breakdown.
McCutcheon grew up on a farm in the country town of Narromine, 40km west of Dubbo in the Orana region of NSW. Although he now lives in Glebe, the self-professed country boy still enjoys riding motorcycles and takes particular pride in his Harley Davidson, affectionately nicknamed “Betty.”
Pat attributes his speed around the park to his red pair of undies, which allegedly make him run faster.
As well as making a return to action, 2013 will see
This year should see Pat complete his Diploma of Surveying from TAFE NSW.
