Tomorrow marks a significant day on the school rugby calendar in the form of Combined Associative Schools (CAS) XV’s hosting the Greater Public Schools of NSW (GPS) representative sides tomorrow afternoon at Knox Grammar.
The matches will contribute to the selection process for the NSWSRU sides to compete at the Australian Schools Rugby Union U18 Championships and national selections at Riverview early next month.
NSW Waratahs General Manager of Rugby Tim Rapp says the competition between the school sporting associations is nothing but beneficial for the game as the developing schoolboy talent begins its transition into Colts and beyond.
“With all divisions of school rugby going at each other hammer and tong, the players will be putting their best foot forward in contention for a spot in the NSW Schoolboy sides,” said Rapp.
“From the School’s State Championships, players are then eligible for selection at the national level.”
Three matches will be held beginning from 3:15pm tomorrow afternoon, when GPS White faces GPS Blue. GPS 2nd XV will face CAS 2nd XV afterwards, and is followed by First Grade at 6:15pm.
NSW Gen Blue Head Coach Pat McCutcheon says that the State Championships and Schoolboy tests are a great platform for young players to build their profiles and progress through the pathway to the Super Rugby level.
“At every step of the way, there is a representative of the NSW Waratahs or Gen Blue watching to see who puts their hand up,” said McCutcheon.
“Our goal is to progress these talented young players through the ranks with the intention to push them all the way to the National Schools level and beyond.
“From here, selected players will be fed through the Gen Blue U20 system and hopefully go on to qualify for Australian U20’s representative honours.”
More trials will follow throughout the week with the NSWSRU carnival at Curagul Fields, North Turramurra to take place this Friday, June 23. NSWSRU representative sides will be announced officially the following day on Saturday 24 June.
