The All Blacks may have lifted the Webb Ellis trophy but with the 2012 FxPro Super Rugby title up for grabs, there has never been a better time to show your support for the HSBC Waratahs.
Here's 10 great reasons to show your support and sign up now
1. An exciting squad
Take a combination of seasoned internationals like Dan Vickerman and Rocky Elsom, add attacking backs like last year’s Super Rugby top try scorer Sarel Pretorius and the dynamic and versatile Wallaby Adam Ashley-Cooper and then throw in emerging talent like Bernard Foley and Tom Kingston.
These acquisitions will strengthen a squad which already boasts a number of Australia’s leading players, such as Drew Mitchell, Berrick Barnes, Tatafu Polota-Nau, Wycliff Palu, Lachie Turner, Benn Robinson, Sekope Kepu, Dean Mumm and Rob Horne. There’s no doubt that the challenge for selection will be fierce and the result is a squad that Head Coach Michael Foley believes capable of the kind of performances that will have fans and families alike coming back for more.

4. A blockbuster home draw
The 2012 FxPro Super Rugby draw sees the HSBC Waratahs play host to all the big names of the southern hemisphere rugby. The action kicks off on Saturday February 25 with the first of four local derbies, a blockbuster opener against current Super Rugby champions, the Queensland Reds. As well as the start of the season, the match also celebrates the 130th anniversary of the NSW-Queensland rivalry. It doesn’t get much bigger than that.
And the excitement keeps coming as the HSBC Waratahs take on all the big names of international Super Rugby including the Crusaders, Hurricanes, Sharks and Bulls. One thing’s for sure, the stage is set for a massive season of world class rugby, and you could be there to enjoy it
5. Action-packed afternoon footy
Fuelled by a desire to deliver an exciting and family friendly match program, the 2012 season’s tournament sees the return to the great tradition of afternoon footy with two blockbuster matches scheduled for the Sydney Football Stadium.
On Saturday March 24 the HSBC Waratahs welcome the Sharks to the SFS (kick off 3.35pm) and on Sunday April 29 it’s the turn of the Crusaders (4.10pm).
6. Meet the team
As well as securing your seat for the best of the season’s action, membership is also your ticket to meeting the stars themselves, thanks to an exciting calendar of members-only events. Full details of all member events are available online at www.waratahs.com.au/Membership.
7. A closer connection
When Michael took over the helm last year, he said it was vital for the team to have a greater connection with its rugby families. In 2012 we are committed to achieving that both on and off the field. Sharing the past frustration of many members, supporters and players, the Head Coach says the squad is determined to use them to inform future preparations that ‘support the team’s desire to take a step forward in 2012’. As he puts it, “We are preparing for performances of character and skill indicative of the respect and gratitude we have for your ongoing support.”
You can read Michael’s full letter to supporters online at http://www.waratahs.com.au/Waratahs/Membership.aspx.
8. A season to celebrate
As well as the great draw, this season is an opportunity to celebrate two significant anniversaries.
Firstly, 2012 marks the 130th anniversary of the birth of the NSW Waratahs. The oldest Rugby Union body in the Southern Hemisphere, the New South Wales Rugby Union formed in 1874, with the NSW Waratahs following in 1882, when they played their first ever match against fierce rivals Queensland Continuing one of Australian sport’s oldest sporting rivalries, these two teams will kick-off the season on February 25 and a programme of special celebrations is planned for this significant milestone.
Secondly, our clash with the Bulls on May 11 will honour the 75th anniversary of “The Downing of the ‘Boks,” the most famous game in NSW Rugby history when we beat the all conquering Springboks in 1937 at the SCG. We will wear a ‘Limited Edition’ heritage jersey in this game and we invite you to be a part of the excitement of this historic night.
9. Free entry to trial matches
Members receive free entry to all HSBC Waratahs trial matches, where you'll be one of the first to see the new squad in action. A vital part of the squad's Super Rugby preparation, this year's trial matches will take place in Tamworth (against Samoa on Friday February 10) and at the SFS the following week, full details due to be confirmed shortly.
