Following a horror run of injuries, Damien Fitzpatrick will again be forced to spend the majority of the 2013 season on the sidelines. Despite showing enormous promise, the talented hooker has been restricted to just 22 caps across four seasons of Super Rugby, with another knee operation recently forcing him to wait until 2014 to add to that tally.
Damien grew up on Sydney’s Lower North Shore and played his junior rugby for the Mosman Whales. He attended St Joseph’s College in Hunter’s Hill and his rugby ability and leadership qualities quickly saw him rise to the top – in 2007 he captained the Australian Schoolboys team.
He made his debut for the HSBC Waratahs against the Crusaders in 2009, at just 19 years of age. The same year, he captained Australian in the Under-20 Junior World Championship and was selected in the Wallabies preliminary squad for the spring tour.
Fitzpatrick was forced to spend much of the 2011 Super Rugby season on the sidelines with a knee injury, however he returned to club rugby in great form, finishing in the top 15 for the Ken Catchpole Medal and was one of Eastwood's standout players in their premiership success. He showed early promise in 2012, before an ACL reconstruction saw him relegated to just two games in the 2012 season.
Damien comes from a strong sporting family – his mother was a competitive swimmer while his father was a competitive sailor. He is currently undertaking a Bachelor of Commerce at Macquarie University, which will keep him busy until 2015. He still lives in the Mosman suburb where he grew up.
