The nephew of former All Blacks coach John Hart, 24-year-old Grayson Hart steps up into the full squad for the 2013 season. A member of the 2012 Extended Playing Squad, the Southern Districts youngster was rewarded with a senior contract after impressing in his debut performance against the Brumbies and in the final round of his team’s 2012 campaign, against the Reds in Brisbane.
Born in New Zealand, Grayson went to Dilworth College and Mt Roskill Grammar School, both in Auckland. After starting his junior rugby career at the local Carlton Rugby Club at the age of 13, he continued to play at Grammar Carlton after graduating from high school.
A former national representative at New Zealand Under 19 and Under 20 level, when he played alongside All Blacks Aaron Smith, Sam Whitelock and Zac Guildford, in 2007 he made his NPC debut at just 19 years of age, playing for Auckland and then North Harbour. He went on to play Super Rugby for the Blues, debuting against the Bulls in 2009 and playing seven games before making the decision to cross the Tasman to Sydney on the advice of his uncle who he credits as having a “massive” influence on his career.
Australian by virtue of his paternal grandmother, the up and coming halfback was forced to wait until the penultimate game of the 2012 season to add to his Super Rugby experience. Having impressed his team mates and coaches with his dedication and commitment to training throughout the season, Grayson was rewarded with a place in the starting XV for the HSBC Waratahs penultimate match against the Brumbies at ANZ Stadium.
A pivotal part of Southern Districts’ Shute Shield revival, Grayson played a significant role in helping his club reach the semi finals of the Shute Shield competition for only the second time in their history, defeating reigning premiers Eastwood.
Outside rugby, Grayson is hoping to pursue a career in fitness and health. Having recently completed his Diploma of Business with the Australian Vocational Training Academy, he is also studying for both a Certificate III in Fitness through distance learning with the New Zealand Institute of Health and Fitness and a Certificate IV in Fitness with the Australian Institute of Fitness. Grayson is associated with several charities including Life Education's Trust New Zealand and Drug and Alcohol Education for School Children.
A recreational golfer and keen chess player, Grayson lives in Bondi and lists ‘Remember the Titans’ as his favourite movie.
