A contract extension in 2013 will see the hard-running Tom Carter play his tenth successive season with the HSBC Waratahs. Known for his passion and fierce competitive spirit, Tom wears his heart on his sleeve every time he pulls on a NSW jersey.
Carter played his first game for his state as a 21-year-old against Salta in Argentina back in 2004 – making his debut alongside current HSBC Waratah teammate Benn Robinson.
However ongoing injury problems then stalled his promising career until 2008, when he made his Super Rugby debut on the wing against the Hurricanes in Sydney.
Carter has gone on to notch up an impressive 80 caps for NSW, giving him the illustrious honour of being the 18th most capped player in NSW Rugby history. His 15 tries also place him in the top ten try scorers for the HSBC Waratahs in Super Rugby, just one behind teammate Drew Mitchell.
In the opening match of the 2011 season Carter became just the 49th player in NSW Rugby history to earn 50 State Caps. Later that year, he scored a rare hat trick against the Highlanders and led the HSBC Waratahs’ season try scorers alongside Drew Mitchell, crossing six times. In 2012, Tom added a further 14 caps to his impressive tally, starting eight times and crossing the line on four occasions.
Carter was born and raised in the town of Young, 250km south east of Sydney, where he attended Young North Primary School and played his junior rugby for the Young Yabbies.
When he was 13, he relocated to Wahroonga, on Sydney’s Upper North Shore, to complete his secondary education at Knox Grammar. His physical presence and attacking nous saw him play in Knox’s renowned First XV in his final two years of schooling.
Playing rugby is a Carter family tradition; brother Ed earned a provincial cap for NSW in 2001, captained the Australian Sevens side and played for the prestigious Perpignan club in France. Nowadays he plays another role – acting as Tom’s long-serving manager.
Away from the rugby field, Tom is also a keen follower of cricket and boxing. He is studying for a Masters of Exercise Science by correspondence through Edith Cowan University and already holds a Bachelor of Science from Sydney University.
Tom lives with his wife Petria, who will shortly complete her medical studies, in Forest Lodge. Long time supporters of the Sydney Children’s Hospital in Randwick, Tom has supported a number of charity and fundraising initiatives, including The Gold week Telethon 2012 that took place in June and raised a fantastic $2.6 million for Sydney Children’s Hospital.
