Bernard Foley proved to be an attacking revelation at fullback and flyhalf for the HSBC Waratahs last season, exhibiting the flair and vision he had honed in his time on the international 7s circuit.
And his hard work and raw talent did not go unnoticed by national selectors. After just 11 appearances for his state, the 22 year old’s rare talent saw him rewarded with a call up to the 39-man Wallabies squad for the June test series against Scotland and Wales. His stellar season was then capped off when he won the Chris Whitaker Aspiring Waratah Medal for 2012.
Foley came of age as a flyhalf in round six of the 2013 season, when his poise and determination saw him score 15 points, including a match-winning penalty goal after full time, against the Auckland Blues.
Foley grew up in Dural, attending Redfield College before relocating to Sydney to study at St Aloysius College on the lower North Shore. Growing up, Foley credits NSW greats Matt Burke, Phil Waugh and David Lyons as the players he looked up to most.
Bernard had the rare honour of making his Super Rugby debut in a finals match, coming on in the closing stages of the 2011 Qualifying Final against the Blues. He was a silver medallist with the Australian Sevens team at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and went on to captain the national squad on the 2010/11 IRB Series. After making his first debut in state colours, he enjoyed a stellar season with Sydney University where his skill and versatility earned him a call-up to the Australian Barbarians and a full-time Super Rugby contract.
Bernard’s father was the Middleweight Weightlifting champion for Sydney University. When he’s not playing rugby, Foley enjoys playing cricket recreationally. Last year, he graduated with a Bachelor of Economics from Sydney University. He still lives out in the Hills District, making the 40km journey from the suburb of Kenthurst to Moore Park every day for training.
