After a frustrating injury layoff last season, the electric Lachie Turner bring his pace, skill and experience back to the HSBC Waratahs backline in 2013. Prior to tearing his hamstring in the 2012 preseason trial against Samoa, Turner hadn’t missed a match since his HSBC Waratahs debut – an impressive run of 67 consecutive Super Rugby appearances.
Educated at Newington College, in Sydney’s inner-west, Lachie played his junior rugby for the Epping Rams and was an Australian Schoolboys representative in 2005. The following year Turner joined the HSBC Waratah Academy, and a sparkling run of form saw him awarded the inaugural Chris Whitaker Aspiring Waratah Award at season’s end.
In the 2007 tournament, he earned his first Super Rugby cap in round seven against the Stormers in Sydney, going on to play every match in the remainder of the year. His head-turning debut season was capped off when he won the Super Rugby Rookie of the Year award and received a call up to the Australia-A side to play Tonga in Sydney. In that game, Turner was awarded man of the match after turning in a breakthrough three-try performance.
And he didn’t have to wait long to achieve even higher honours, making his Wallabies debut in 2008 against France in Brisbane. He has gone on to represent his country 15 times, and was a member of the 2010 Rugby Sevens squad that won silver at the Delhi Commonwealth Games.
The same year, Lachie pipped Eastwood teammate John Grant to be named Australia’s fastest footballer over 100m, overcoming the quickest players from Rugby, Rugby League, Australian Rules and Soccer in a blisteringly fast time of 11.10 seconds.
Off the field, Turner is heavily involved with the work of Cystic Fibrosis Australia and is studying for a Masters of International Sports Management with Southern Cross University. He lives in Cammeray with his grey staffy puppy called Leroy.
