Former Australia U20s winger Peter Betham made his HSBC Waratahs debut against the Crusaders in April 2012, in front of a 30,000-strong home crowd at Allianz Stadium. Turning in a composed debut performance, the 23-year-old proved his potential against one of the in-form sides in the competition and has been rewarded with a place in the 30-man squad for 2013.
Having trained with the side throughout the pre-season, injuries to Lachie Turner and Drew Mitchell forced a reshuffle in the NSW backline even before the HSBC Waratahs’ Super Rugby season had begun. Remaining with the squad as cover into the season, Betham’s chance came in round 10, when an injury to Bernard Foley saw him elevated straight into the starting XV. After a solid debut, he retained his place the following week against the Brumbies in Canberra.
A strong and elusive outside back, Peter returned to NSW pre-season training in October after spending the off-season playing for New Zealand premiership side Tasman. Seeking a challenge and the opportunity to play alongside Jeremy Sua, a childhood friend and fellow Shute Shield player, the experience has brought an added confidence to Peter’s game. He finished the tournament as one of the top three offensive players, scoring six tries throughout Tasman’s campaign, which ended with a semi final loss to Otago.
Born in New-Zealand but brought up in the inner west, Peter went to school at St Josephs College, playing his schoolboy rugby at wing or fullback alongside fellow Joeys’ teammate and flyhalf Kurtley Beale. A member of Sydney University's formidable club side, Betham so impressed his then-club coach Damien Hill, that the new Melbourne Rebels coach rewarded him with a spot in squad for the inaugural 2011 season, when he earned his first eight Super Rugby caps.
Brought up in Sydney’s inner west, Peter still lives in his home suburb of Mount Druitt. A long time Coogee Wombat, he joined the club at the age of 10, playing right through the age groups until earning a place in the Joeys’ first XV in 2005. As a wing and fullback, he was a member of the premiership-winning sides of 2005 and 2006.
Outside rugby, Peter enjoys a round of golf, spending time with his family and listening to music, in particular New Zealand rock band Six60.
He has recently joined the Sydney University club ahead of the 2013 season.
