After impressing in the recent Shute Shield finals series, including the 2012 Grand Final win over Southern Districts, 24-year-old Ollie Atkins became the penultimate addition to the HSBC Waratahs’ 2013 roster.
Described as a stand out for his work rate and the impact around the ground, the Students' lock puts his 117kg, 200cm frame to good use across the field, whether it be with ball in hand, at the breakdown or tackle or in the set piece.
His inclusion capped a breakthrough year for the promising youngster, who just 12 months ago was playing for the Students in the 2011 third grade Grand Final.
Born in Tasmania, Ollie moved to the Kangaroo Valley in the NSW Southern Highlands 18 months later, before settling in the Bondi area at the age of six.
A former Scots College student, on completion of his studies, Ollie took a gap year in Scotland and played with the famous Edinburgh Academicals club. Upon returning to NSW, he joined Sydney University Colts and returned to his studies, completing a Bachelor of Agricultural Economics at Sydney University in 2011 and representing the Students’ in third grade.
Shortly after taking up a full time trade support role with GrainCorp, the Hobart-born lock got his first taste of professional rugby when he received a late Super Rugby call up from the Western Force, making his debut against the Blues in Auckland in round 16 playing a full 80 minutes in the 32-9 loss at Eden Park and adding a second appearance the following week against the Crusaders.
Returning to Sydney and full time work after three weeks in Perth, he rose up the club ranks, playing a significant part in the Sydney University’s successful first grade Shute Shield finals campaign, helping the club secure an eighth Premiership title in nine years with a single-point victory over Southern Districts in the 2012 Grand Final at Concord Oval in September.
After being introduced to rugby as a six-year-old at Eastern Suburbs’ feeder club McAuley Juniors, Ollie moved to the Bays Junior Rugby Club, representing them at under-7s and under-8s. In 2006 he was captain of rugby for Scots College and played in the second row alongside Sam Carter, who now plays for the Brumbies.
Outside rugby, Ollie enjoys surfing and is a keen cricketer, having represented NSW Combined Independent Schools as an under-12 in a team that also included fellow HSBC Waratahs team mate Cam Crawford. He lives in Bondi Junction.
