Matt Lucas, younger brother of Queensland Reds utility back Ben Lucas, joined the HSBC Waratahs for the 2013 season, coincidentally making his NSW debut from the bench against his brother's team in the opening Super Rugby game of 2013.
A former member of the Australian Rugby Union’s National Academy in Queensland and a current member of the Australian Sevens squad, he earned a place in the NSW squad off the back of impressive performances in five legs of the 2011/12 Sevens series, including Tokyo where he was part of the Australian squad that claimed the title.
A young halfback with enormous talent and potential, the 20-year-old also impressed NSW coaches with his efforts for Brisbane club side Sunnybank, who contested Queensland’s 2012 Premiership Grand Final against QRU heavyweights Queensland University, having won the title in 2011.
Extremely excited about his move to NSW, Matt’s decision to move to Sydney will see him reunited with former 2009 Australian Schoolboys and 2010 Australian Under-20s team mate Greg Peterson, whom he plans to live with while he settles into life in Sydney, as well as two other former representative team mates, Tom Kingston (Schoolboys) and fellow newcomer Michael Hooper, another member of the Under-20s squad to tour Italy in 2011.
Educated at Brisbane’s Robertson State School and St Josephs College Gregory Terrace, Matt first took up rugby aged six with the same Sunnybank club that he has represented throughout his career to date and that is home to his three other brothers, Ben, Tommy and Isaac.
The oldest of the four brothers and a current Queensland Red, Ben has long been Matt’s role model on and off the field. Having played together at club level for 14 years, this season could be the first time the two come face to face on a rugby pitch, a prospect Matt admits will seem strange as well as appealing.
Having already represented the Queensland Second XV against NSW A in 2011, Matt intends to make NSW home and hopes to make his Super Rugby debut in the light blue of NSW before going on to secure a place in the full 30-man squad for the 2014 season and beyond.
Outside rugby, he is studying for a Bachelor of Education (Primary) at Curtin University in Perth via Open Universities Australia. As well as a passion for fishing which he shares with his Sydney-based uncle, he enjoys golf (playing off a handicap of 16) and surfing
