The NSW Gen Blue U20 team are still in the hunt for a finals sport despite the loss to a strong Qld Reds U20 outfit, going down to the hosts 36-10 in Brisbane.

The NSW Gen Blue U20’s side now move their attention to Friday night’s vital match against the Rebels, where a win will give them the opportunity to set up a rematch with the Reds in the final. The win today secured the Reds a home final in two weeks time.

Tries in the 15th and 76th minutes to Harry Johnson-Holmes and Kepu Lokotui were not enough to hold out the Reds who powered home with five tries.

Gen Blue Head Coach, Pat McCutheon, said “possession is key and we didn’t have much of it, especially in the first half.

“Our lineout execution was poor and with seven or eight missed chances we didn’t give our backs a chance to properly fire.

“We dug ourselves into a hole, so it was a positive to see the team hold some composure and we played a much better game in the second half.

“We are still in the hunt and now face the Rebels next week. We aren’t out of the competition and it turns up the importance of that game as we want to be playing in that final.”

Fullback Tim Clements thought that the team “competed really well and were unlucky with the first and second phase attacks and connecting the plays together. We had moments holding the ball but not enough of those moments.”

“A positive to take away is that we were physical right at the start of the first half and started with an intensity we want to carry throughout the game and that is a big improvement from last week. We have improved each week and will look to again next week.”

The NSW Gen Blue U20’s will now face the Melbourne Rebels in Melbourne on March 24.
