Strong NSW presence in Australian Schoolboys selections

Sixteen NSW schoolboys have been named in the Australian Schoolboys and Australian Barbarians squads in the wake of the ASRU State Championships held in Sydney throughout the week.

Nine members of the NSW I side made their way into the top Australian Schoolboys squad alongside two NSW II players in Angus Bell and Finn Wright. The Australian Barbarians have five NSW players in the form of three NSW I and two NSW II members.

It was a hard slog for NSW sides in the final day of the ASRU tournament where NSW I went down to QLD I by five points in the third place play-off. NSW II were to have a similar fate when they lost to Combined States 22-12.

Australian Schoolboys Head Coach Pat Langtry made light of the selection of NSW players despite the teams’ results in the tournament just been.

“In terms of Australian Schoolboys selections, it was great to see players and teams improve throughout the tournament,” said Langtry. “Although both Queensland I and NSW I both experienced some disappointment in their results, we saw players improve from those disappointments and really show their potential.

“With the upcoming games against Fiji Schools and NZ Schools, we know they will be up to the mark in all components of the game and will threaten in all components of the game, so we’ll have to have a good preparation and planning period to match them.”

NSW Waratahs CEO Andrew Hore said that the number of NSW inclusions in the side reflect the quality of the game within the NSW school system.

“The pathways we have here in NSW allow young athletes to progress through the ranks from school level, to Gen Blue and beyond,” said Hore.

“It is important that we celebrate and nurture schoolboy talent as they are the Super Rugby players of the future as long as they keep focused and work hard on becoming true professionals.”

The Australian Schoolboys and Barbarians sides will first play in October when they face Fiji and New Zealand in a two game series.
