The squad that will represent Australia in the upcoming Commonwealth Youth Games in the Bahamas later this week has been selected with half the squad coming from NSW.

The team of twelve girls was selected off the back of an intense week-long training camp at Queensland’s Runaway Bay, with six of those hailing from this state.

NSWRU Female Development Officer Caitlin Aquilina says she was impressed by the number of NSW Rugby 7s program girls included in the national youth side.

“The NSW Rugby 7s program helps develop the talented rugby players that have been identified by NSW Rugby or other coaches. The NSW 7s program gives the players a more intensive training to give them more elite exposure,” said Aquilina.

Of the six selected NSW players, five of them originate from NSW Country regions which Aquilina says demonstrates the reach of the pathway system.

“Country girls are identified in the satellite programs where the girls all come for training in one area,” said Aquilina. “For instance, Far North Coast girls go to the FNC program, Central West girls go to Dubbo, and so on.

“These girls were identified at the 2016 NSW State Champs and were selected in the NSW state team. From there, they were selected into the Australian Youth Squad with training occurring in their own state.

“They are then selected in the Australian Commonwealth Games squad.”

Australia will take on sides from Canada, Fiji, Wales and Trinidad and Tobago throughout the course of the three day tournament, beginning on July 19 at Thomas A. Robinson Stadium, Nassau.
